One of the best produced "indie" bands of the early 90's was the Kitchens of Distinction. They were gay, though they played songs about male and female lovers, but they eschewed the synthesizers and drum machines of many outwardly gay acts of the time, and instead layered guitars and effects as well or even better than many more well known shoegaze bands. They flat-out rocked.
The first song I heard from the Kitchens was the next one on this page, Drive That Fast.
They never sold a lot of records, probably due to that whole homophobia thing, but their influence can be heard in quite a few bands who came down the road later.
